The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
